History

1832

Teaching foreign languages started at the School of Civil Engineers since its very foundation. French, German and English were taught by native speakers from Europe.

1887

The course of Technical Translation was introduced and taught to future engineers and architects. Up until 191, students were tested in technical translation twice a year with a final examination in the end of the second year of training. Students of the third and fourth years could continue studying foreign languages as extracurricular courses and take lectures on the theory of Finland languages..

1943

The Department of Foreign Languages was established in the evacuated institute. Only three teachers worked there at the beginning.

1944-1945

The department significantly expanded. A French grammar textbook, German technical glossary and an English textbook were published. The latter was recommended as the principal textbook for all technical schools of higher education.

1988-2012

The department staff continued working on publishing new educational manuals and other language-related literature: the German part of the Architectural Dictionary, the Pipeline Fittings Dictionary (in four languages), books Reinforcement of Structural Components in Reconstruction and Language Associations” were published.

1999

A Center for German Linguistics was founded at SPbGASU with support of Higher School of Wiesbaden. Presently, the center is under the supervision of the Department of Foreign Languages and is quite active in the promotion of the German language and literature.
