Dear friends and colleagues!

I am pleased to welcome you to the website of the Department of Architectural and Urban Heritage. Our department dates back to 1830, when a special department was established at the Imperial Academy of Arts (ICA) to train architects with a particular focus at organizing architectural and construction work in cities and provinces of Russia. In 1842, for the implementation of this grandiose Russia-wide idea, the Construction School (SU) was formed, which became the ancestor of the Architectural Department of our University. The structural core of the SU comprised a division that was the predecessor of our department. Even the transformation and expansion of the School in 1882 to the Institute of Civil Engineers (IGI) did not change the specialization of the department: the creation of modern high-quality architecture based on an in-depth knowledge of historical architecture and historical architectural and construction art in unity with the likewise in-depth development of architectural and construction law and principles of architectural and construction activities organization throughout entire Russia.

This led to quite exceptional results.

In the period of 1850s - to 1914, graduates and professors of the Department built more than two thirds of buildings, structures and facilities in St. Petersburg - Petrograd, not to mention the rest of Russia; many of those buildings are nowadays deservedly considered architectural monuments and cultural heritage sites. In those years, more than 90% of the city, provincial, and diocesan architects of all of Russia were graduates of our Department. Names of many graduates and professors of the department are rightfully included in the encyclopedia, monographs and textbooks.

In the troubled reformist 1920s, our department took an active part in major reforms in architectural education. In 1924, the modern department of architectural design “split off” from the “trunk” of the old department, and in 1928, the modern department of Urban Planning appeared.

Nowadays, we continue the tradition of the department educational school. We have revived all three educational lines for our students, including:

- Protection of historical and cultural heritage

- Restoration of cultural heritage sites (monuments)

- Reconstruction of the historical environment.

For several years now, we have been training Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree students, as well as postgraduate students in the following areas:

 - 07.03.02. Reconstruction and restoration of architectural heritage (Bachelor’s degree students)

Specialization: Reconstruction and restoration of architectural heritage

- 07.04.02. “Reconstruction and restoration of architectural heritage (Master’s degree students)

Specialization: Reconstruction and restoration of architectural heritage

- 05.23.20. Theory and history of architecture, restoration and reconstruction of historical and architectural heritage (postgraduate students, doctoral programs)

We are starting training students in the area of

- 54.03.04. Restoration

Specialization: Restoration of architectural objects and architectural environment" (bachelor)

All of our students, postgraduate and doctoral candidates perform thematically unique jobs. Starting with the 2nd year of training, all works are carried out on the orders of the city and regional administrations of Northwest of Russia, committees for heritage protection, museum reserves, major restoration organizations; they all comprise design and research components. After all, we are dealing with presently existing historical objects! Before developing a design for restoration of a building or a structure, or a design for reconstruction of a historical environment, it is necessary to carefully and thoroughly examine all the historical data about this object, including that in archives, and collections of historical materials, not to mention full-scale on-site surveys and examinations of the object.

Department students and teachers took part in numerous international educational programs with architectural universities and faculties of Germany, Spain, Italy, Norway, Finland, and Sweden.

Final qualification works (theses) of our Bachelor’s and master’s degree students invariably receive top awards at international and Russian thesis competitions.

Upon graduation, our alumni work in the monument protection committees, leading design, restoration and contractual restoration organizations of not only of St. Petersburg but the entire Northwest Russia.

After a brief description of the history and modern life of our department, I want to wish our students (present and future) thriving education, high-quality training, and great success in their professional activities upon graduation.
