Scientific activity

The scientific activity of the department began at the very moment when it appeared as a section of the Russian language at the Department of Foreign Languages. The first foreign students appeared at LISI in 1946: those were citizens of Hungary, Romania and Mongolia. In the 1950s, the number of foreign students approached one hundred (primarily citizens of the PRC), and in August 1955, by the order of the rector, the Department of Russian Language was founded

Its first head was Valentina M. Samkova, Candidate of Philology. Under her leadership, the Department was one of the first in the country to start developing the theme of scientific style of speech. The choice of the topic was determined by the need to form communication skills among foreign students, in the language of the speciality in the first place. The previous studies in this sphere were rather generic in nature and did not reflect the specifics of the disciplines of a particular technical university. Given the dynamic nature of the language development in general, as well as changes in curricula and educational standards, other topics that developed in subsequent years became quite relevant: difficult cases of vocabulary and grammar of the Russian language for foreigners, stylistic features of the Russian language, issues of regional studies, language of speciality, study of literature for foreigners, problems of the methodology of teaching Russian as a foreign language and certain types of speech activities, etc.

During the existence of the Department, many of its teachers completed postgraduate and doctoral studies, defended candidate dissertations.

Business trips abroad also contributed to the improvement of the qualification level of the staff. Employees of the Department successfully worked in universities in Bulgaria, India, Italy, Cuba, Mongolia, Poland, Syria, Finland, France, Czech Republic, and Yugoslavia. Not only they conducted practical classes in the Russian language, but also gave open lessons to their colleagues.

The scientific interests of the department to a certain extent were stipulated by the contingent of foreign students at SPbGASU: until the early 1990s, students and postgraduate students from more than 70 countries studied here. From 1970 to 1991, the Department annually held summer Russian language courses for student translators and other Finnish citizens, so the problems of comparative grammar also became topical for the research, reports and publications.

After 1990, a Preparatory Department for foreign students with no knowledge of the Russian language and Russian language courses were established at the department of the Russian language, which was the basis for studying and searching for effective ways of presenting language material when teaching grammar and types of speech activity for this category of students.

New scientific challenges faced the Russian teachers in connection with the introduction of a new educational standard in 2000 and the need to improve the communicative, cultural, and professional competencies of Russian-speaking students. The Department was included in the research necessary for compiling programs for the new course of “The Russian language and culture of speech” in technical universities, as well as in the creation of an educational and methodological complex for it.

The teachers of the Department L. V. Gilyanova and G. A. Zadonskaya are certified USE experts. Every year, starting with the introduction of the new exam form, they participated in the verification of the works of high school graduates. All Department teachers teach Russian at SPbGASU preparatory courses.

Since 1999, the Department is a collective member of the Russian Society of Teachers of the Russian Language and Literature (ROPRYAL), as well as a collective member of the International Association of Teachers of the Russian Language and Literature (MAPRYAL).

To date, in accordance with the tasks of the Department and the disciplines taught at it, there are two spheres in research work: theoretical and methodological issues in teaching Russian as a foreign language and the Russian language and the culture of speech at a technical university.

In 2018, the Department organized an All-Russian scientific and practical conference with international participation “New and traditional in the practice of teaching Russian as a native and foreign language in Russian non-philological universities”, in which more than seventy teachers of Russian as a native and foreign language at higher educational institutions took part.
