Welcome to the SPbGASU Department of Geotechnics!

The department was established in 1934, and got its present name in 1992. By now, it has already trained thousands of specialists and recognized experts in geotechnical engineering, including about 20 doctors of sciences and nearly 200 candidates of sciences.

All facilities are built on, in, or with earth materials. Geotechnical engineering is the branch of civil engineering that deals with problems involving soil and rock, and the water and other fluids that permeate them. The discipline is critical for addressing all sorts of issues, including sustainable infrastructure construction and reconstruction, and mitigation of natural hazards. Its applications include the design of foundations for structures and tunnels, stability of natural slopes and embankments, etc.

Studying geotechnical engineering includes mastering such specialized subjects as engineering geology, road soil science, mineralogy, petrography, soil mechanics, footings, foundations and special courses for graduate students. By now, the Department comprises three doctors of technical sciences and 12 candidates of technical and geological and mineralogical sciences. Our alumni successfully work in the construction; many of them lead scientific and production companies.

The Department enjoys broad international recognition: our staff members participated in research and teaching work at leading universities in many countries: Belarus, Finland, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Sweden, USA, etc. Our specialists participated in the construction of major structures, development of many cities in the Far North, East and West Siberia, and the Far East. Our world-famous scientists made a significant contribution to the development of national foundation engineering, soil mechanics, engineering geology and other spheres geotechnical engineering. Research outcomes of the department were published in numerous monographs, textbooks, and articles.

I wish our students successful and exciting education!

We also are looking forward to working with our colleagues on new interesting projects.
