Rules for using the computer network for students

1. Network etiquette
The local network and the Internet offer users information, services, activities and communication opportunities. There are rules of conduct for everyone on the network. Certain restrictions are set by the administrator, but each user is responsible for their actions themselves. Users must not use the network for illegal and / or non-academic purposes.

2. User name and password
All students receive a username that matches the student ID number, their own folder on a network drive, access to the distance learning system, and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet through the university network. To avoid troubles while working on the network, you must remember and not tell anyone your username and password. Each user creates an individual password.
Any problems that arise should be reported to the SPbGASU Information Technology Department ( or to any computer center engineer should they arise in computer classes.

3. Network registration в сети
In a computer class, when registering on a computer, the system creates a personal user profile. User profile settings are not saved in the computer class, nor are files saved outside a personal folder on a network drive. When shutting down the computer, you must log off.

Registration on SPbGASU computers
The assigned username is saved when working on computers in any department of SPbGASU. This means that the same username (login) and password are used to register on any computer of the University.

The original password consists of all characters for the student ID number. At the first registration, the system will ask you to change the password, which you must create yourself and which should consist of at least 6 characters. A good password should consist of numbers and letters. Uppercase and lowercase letters are different characters.

Password is valid for 90 days. Prior to the expiration of this period, the computer will warn that the password is out of date and will require a change. Since you have to update the password repeatedly, think ahead of time how to do it: maybe it’s worth entering some kind of non-replaceable characters, which should be supplemented with numbers that change every time. Then you can always remember only the main characters, and store the variable part, for example, in the phone.

If you forget the password: after ten incorrect attempts to enter the account it will be blocked; the ability to unlock it appears only 10 minutes later.

To enter email, use your password. Passwords for email and for authorization on the computer may be the same, although it is preferable to have different passwords.

4. Network folder
Each student has a personal network folder of 2 gigabytes in the university’s storage system. The student’s personal folder should only be used for educational purposes. It is not allowed to save anything that is not related to training, for example, music, video, games, etc. Other students cannot get into your personal folder, but the network administration has the right to view students' personal folders and clear them of those files that should not be stored in them. Keep this in mind. Do not store personal information in your personal folders.

Remember to keep your personal folder in order. Delete the data that is no longer needed, and then the two gigabytes provided to you on a shared drive will be quite enough. Archival training materials can be stored, for example, on one of the cloud services, such as Yandex.Disk, Google Disk or Microsoft SkyDrive.

5. Student email account
The email address is used to deliver information related to the educational process, i.e., changes in the schedule, events, information from the dean’s office, etc. Any student is interested in receiving timely information related to their studies. Systematic checking of the mailbox is the responsibility of each student, as is observance of network etiquette when using computers of the Computer Center.

6. Work in computer classes
Each computer center has a weekly class schedule. If necessary, students can use computers in extracurricular time in accordance with the schedule of the computer class for self-instructional work. However, students are required to observe the cleanliness and internal rules of conduct in computer classes (the rules can be found on the stands of the Centers). Eating, drinking or smoking are absolutely prohibited in all computer classes.

7. Misuse of computer equipment
Physical impact on computers, unauthorized installation and removal of programs and other improper use of computer equipment is strictly prohibited! Improper use and violation of instructions shall lead to the prohibition of using university computers. If you notice any misuse of a computer, be sure to inform the teacher or network administrator about this.

8. Computer operation failure
Report any malfunctions or defects in the computer that you have noticed to your teacher or computer center engineer.

9. If you cannot register on the network
Make sure the username and password are entered correctly. Check if the CapsLock key is pressed, because case (uppercase or lowercase) is important when writing a username and password. Make sure the input language is correct.

Please remember that the system gives 10 attempts to enter a password and after that access to the computer is blocked for ten minutes. If necessary, the administrator can help open access.
