BIM-ICE – BIM Integration in Higher and Continuing Education

BIM-ICE is a new cross-border project implemented by Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering and LAB University of Applied Sciences (Finland). In late 2019, the project proposal was approved for funding within the scope of the South-East Finland – Russia CBC 2014-2020 programme, and the project was launched in spring 2020.

Project Duration: 01.04.2020 – 30.09.2022

Project Description and Objectives:

BIM-ICE standing for “BIM Integration in Higher and Continuing Education” seeks to accelerate BIM implementation in the field of construction and building design in Finland and Russia. Addressing such topical issues as a lack of common terminology in the field and development phase of standardization as well as lacking the technical know-how and competence in process development, the project is aimed at increasing productivity and improving the quality within the construction industry by means of developing new training models and raising the level of education and professional competence among different target groups.

✔  For SPbGASU, participation in the BIM-ICE project is of particular relevance in the context of implementing Russian Federation’s national priority project “Education”, which focuses, inter alia, on ensuring global competitiveness of Russian universities. Today’s realities require adequate approaches to training, and the introduction of BIM technologies has become a necessity for all civil engineering and construction universities helping to empower graduates with advanced technological competencies and enhanced employability skills. At SPbGASU, BIM technologies have already been applied for a few years and a growing number of teachers are working to integrate building information modeling into the educational and research process. The annual BIM championship, held by SPbGASU, plays a significant role in developing and promoting BIM technologies and is included as part of the BIM-ICE project actions.

In the long-term perspective, the project will provide sustainable methodological support of embedding BIM in higher, professional and continuing education process by means of:

  • developing pedagogical approaches to BIM education;
  • creating digital open-access platform of collected and produced materials for professionals and decision makers on different levels;
  • continuity in education and development via educating HEI staff in BIM philosophy and technicalities.

The project target groups include students; experts, teachers and professionals; Finnish and Russian construction companies and decision makers.
