Volleyball is an Olympic sport, a team sports game, in the course of which two teams compete on a special play field, divided by a net, trying to direct the ball to the opponents’ side so that it lands on the opponents’ play field (to finish off the floor), or so that the player of the defending team made a mistake. At the same time, for organizing an attack, players of one team are allowed no more than three touches of the ball in a row (in addition to touching at the block).

It is believed that volleyball appeared thanks to William J. Morgan, a twenty-year-old teacher of physical education at one of the Holyoke colleges (USA). In 1895, at one of his lessons, he hung up a net (approximately at a height of 2 meters) and suggested that his students throw a basketball camera through it. Morgan named the game called Mintonet. Two years later, the first volleyball ball was designed and put into production, and a set of ten rules was developed.

Volleyball is a non-contact, combination sport where each player has a strict specialization on the play field. The most important qualities for volleyball players are jumping capacity for the ability to rise high above the net, reaction, coordination, physical strength for the effective execution of attacking strokes.

For fans, volleyball is a common entertainment and a way of relaxation due to the simplicity of the rules and the availability of equipment.

There are lots of options for volleyball, branched off from the main form: beach volleyball (Olympic sport since 1996), mini-volleyball, pioneer-ball, park volleyball (approved by the FIVB Congress in November 1998 in Tokyo).

At present, volleyball is extremely popular all over the world: 33 million people are engaged in it. In Russia, more than 1 million 300 thousand athletes are involved in volleyball. The beach volleyball has also greatly developed in our country.

Unfortunately, we do not know the year of the creation of men’s and women’s volleyball teams at our university, or their sportive achievements. The history of the university’s men’ and women’ volleyball teams for classic and beach volleyball, in its current form, began in 2012, with the arrival of the new team coach Vladimir D. Getman, candidate of pedagogics, professor at the Department of Physical Education.

The formation of teams was far from easy. There was absolutely nothing: no uniforms, no good balls, no modern volleyball stands and nets and other equipment. The formation of the teams also had quite a few obstacles: the high turn-over of the players, lack of teamwork of partners, different levels of individual professionalism of volleyball players contributed to the problems. However, due to certain organizational measures, intensive training and playing practice, the teamwork emerged, the team composition got stable, and the provision of the teams improved. All this resulted in the successes of the teams.

The women's team successfully performs in the championship of universities of St. Petersburg. Over the same period, the team rose from subgroup “B” of the second group, to group “A”.

According to the results of the 2016/2017 season, the team took second place in its subgroup. The backbone of the women's team is composed of both young and experienced players.

Many players of our teams successfully play for various city volleyball teams in numerous competitions and tournaments held in our city, improving their skills.

Every year, players who graduate from university leave the teams. And every year new athletes come to us. We hope that continuity for many years will continue and that volleyball at the university will be maintained at a high level.

Classic volleyball

According to the results of the 2017/2018 season, the women's team took third place in the 3rd group and rose to the 2nd group. The men's team took 5th place in the 2nd group.

According to the results of the season 2018/2019, the women's team took third place in the 2nd group. The men's team took 8th place in group 1B. The shift of generations affected the results of this year. Experienced players are gone, and the young players who came to replace them lack both experience and skills.

You are welcome to join our teams and help them reach better results.
