Presently, it is planned to create here a unique natural and architectural attraction: a park with direct access to water and panoramic views of the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Exchange ensemble, the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island, the Admiralty and drawbridges. An international competition for the best landscape and architectural concept was announced for this purpose. Anastasia Ryazapova and Darina Mulukova, our undergraduate students, offered their variant, which became their graduation qualification work. FQW was supervised by Konstantin Samolovov and Konstantin Trofimov, lecturers at the Department of Architectural Design.

«We analyzed the territory of Tuchkov Buoyan, as well as the previous experience of its development,» says Anastasia Ryazapova, «on the basis of what we concluded: this place should become the architectural landmark of the city».

The main advantages of the place are its historical views and walking routes connecting buoys with several districts of the city:

«A new public space will be created in the area, where nature and architecture will form a laconic ensemble, parts of which cannot exist separately without each other,» explains Darina Mulukova.

The program of sustainable development of the territory implies the introduction of different ways of movement and the presence of different types of spaces: surface, underground, and embankment space, each of which would have its own special atmosphere. Focusing on the zoning principle, the graduates prescribed possible scenarios for visitors to the park.

According to Konstantin Trofimov, the discussion of the park construction became one of the brightest events in the architectural world of St. Petersburg in 2020:

«Darina and Anastasia took up the theme with great enthusiasm, making a deep analysis of the history of the place and the specifics of the context, carefully and attentively treated the details. The result was a concept of a bright, eventful space. That's what a park in the center of a metropolis should be like».

The results of the official competition are expected in early autumn.

The history of Tuchkov Buoyan accounts of more than one century. The island appeared after the famous flood of 1726. A few years later, it was equipped with a pier with warehouses (outdated word buoyan means river pier). The area was named after Abraham Tuchkov, who designed the first bridge that connected Vasilyevsky island with the Petrogradskaya Side. Over time, the territory expanded, new buildings and storage facilities appeared. In the last third of the 18th century, the Prince Vladimir Cathedral was erected on the territory adjacent to the buoy.

Later, the buoyant became the point of attraction of the townspeople: an avenue was constructed along the coast there; now Dobrolyubova Avenue, Petrovsky and Aleksandrovsky parks and plant nurseries were laid out. Large-scale projects to create a cultural space oriented at the masses of people in this territory were considered. Nevertheless, they could not be fully implemented, and only recently the city renewed its attempts to improve this area.
