Architectural theorists, holders of Master’s degree graduated from the Department of History and Theory of Architecture

The Department of History and Theory of Architecture admitted students in the theoretical area in 2018. The training process was aimed simultaneously at obtaining professional knowledge and at obtaining competencies in the field of research work. After the first year, the graduates chose the topics of their final qualification works that was of their top interest: historical and theoretical or design and experimental. We are going to describe the works done under the guidance of the, associate professor of the Department Milena Zolotaryova, Candidate of Architecture.

Park on the Bank of the River Temernik: Environmental Friendliness and Integration into the Urban Environment

Anastasia Bergman’s FQW: the method of adaptation of the theoretical model of a linear park, master plan of the territory, characteristic sections

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Rostov Region set a task for specialists of specializations to develop measures to improve the Temernik River and to integrate it into the architectural and landscape framework of the city, proposing to create a citywide recreational space in the area. Anastasia Bergman presented a solution to the problem: she devoted her research to the development of the concept of a linear park in the coastal area.

The linear park is supposed to be divided into several thematic zones, connected by an eco path and a nonstop cycle route included in the city bike network in order to integrate the park into the urban space.

“When developing thematic points of interest located in each zone, we took into account the requests of the main groups of visitors, e.g., parents with children, people of mature age, adolescents, various urban communities and local entrepreneurs,” says Anastasia. At the same time, when developing the concept, she paid special attention to the creation of an accessible environment for people with limited mobility, as well as the inclusion of a water space with a variety of activities, berths and descents to the water in the linear park.

According to Milena Zolotaryova, the work is distinguished by a professional systematic approach to solving problems of urban planning scale. The Master’s degree student used a complex of modern techniques. Among them are participation, renovation, scenario modeling and the creation of a local urban brand.

As a result, a harmonious project was developed, both from the point of view of combining the theoretical base, and in terms of the practical solution of the tasks, so that the concept could well be implemented.

To Preserve and Develop: Tikhvin City as a Unique Historical Place

Анна Селезнёва из Петербургского ГАСУРабота выпускницы петербургского ГАСУ

Anastasia Glizhinskaya.  Anastasia Glizhinskaya’s FQW: theoretical aspects of the formation of Old Tikhvin

In her FQW, Anastasia Glizhinskaya focused on an equally urgent problem today: creating a theoretical model for the preservation and development of the city at the example of Tikhvin.

“The tragedy of historical cities such as Tikhvin lies in the incompatibility of their structure with the cruel ‘modern’ planning volumetric structures," says Anastasia, specifying that it is necessary to preserve the contexture of the historical buildings of Old Tikhvin.

To develop a model, the graduate conducted a research, finding out that the building contexture is simultaneously formed by several aspects: compositional (silhouettes, dominant system, the ratio between built-up and green spaces), planning (i.e., the network of streets and squares of the historical center, the rhythm and module of construction development), landscaping (the relief with water systems) and memorial (Rimsky-Korsakov's house and the ruined Cemetery Church).

“Despite the fact that these components are most often located at a sufficient distance from each other, they are united by the cultural and natural landscape,” the author of the work sums up. The aspects of the theoretical model highlighted by Anastasia have a strong practical potential and can help in the formation of the city's strategy.
