On February 11, results of the student architectural competition for transforming historical landscape in Lisy Nos (Primorsky District, St. Petersburg) were announced at Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering. The contest was organized jointly by the SPbGASU Department of Restoration and Reconstruction of Architectural Heritage and Fund for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, and attracted twenty fourth-year students of the Faculty of Architecture.

As part of their coursework, participants were developing concepts of transforming Lisy Nos settlement – a unique historical and landscape zone on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. Peter the Great often stopped here on his way to Kronstadt and Sestroretsk, not missing an opportunity to take a walk around the area. It was by his order that the "Blizhniye Dubki" estate was built here and a unique oak grove was planted.

The exhibition of participants’ projects, arranged at the exposition hall of the Faculty of Architecture, was opened by Sergey Bulavskiy, Chairman of the Board, Fund for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, Sergey Sementsov, D.Sc. in Architecture, Head of the SPbGASU Department of Restoration and Reconstruction of Architectural Heritage, and Associate Professor of the Department Nadezhda Akulova. All winners of the competition received diplomas. Daria Kuprik, who won first place, was awarded an album on the 20th-century architecture. Authors of the five best projects were awarded with certificates for a helicopter excursion over St. Petersburg.

“It has been a real challenge to determine the winner due to your vivid and eager response”, said Sergey Bulavskiy addressing the participants. “It was difficult for us, because each presented work is interesting and offers original solutions: some of them are very innovative, others are more traditional. Thank you for your active participation and creative ideas, for your desire to offer high-quality design proposals while taking care of preserving the environment!”

Sergey Bulavskiy announced five competition winners: Victoria Bogacheva, Victoria Poleshchuk, Oksana Nesvit, Natalia Popp and Daria Kuprik.

Daria Kuprik commented on her project: “My proposal was based on the current situation in the park, I tried to preserve most of the existing green space. In addition, my project included planting trees typical for Russia’s Northwest region, maximally preserving the spirit of suburban comfort. My main idea is to create an arboretum, a natural environment, comfortable paths for walking. There is a yacht club on the existing location, so I designed the aquatic environment as well. Boat tourism and yachting facilities are envisaged, as well as cafes, playgrounds, information centres, and convenient parking spaces.”

Summing up the results, the competition supervisor Sergey Sementsov, Head of the Department of Restoration and Reconstruction of Architectural Heritage, said: “The competition was held on the initiative of the Fund for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, which works with the northern forts of Kronstadt and adjacent territories. Lisy Nos is part of this area. The SPbGASU Department of Restoration and Reconstruction of Architectural Heritage has involved both students and teachers to participate in the competition to offer the best concept of transforming the Lisy Nos territory. The competition coordinator as well as supervisor of most of the projects was Nadezhda Akulova, Associate Professor of the Department. The participants, together with the leaders of two workshops, proposed interesting, non-standard ideas. Every year, our students take an active part in such kind of contests initiated by the city administration and specialized committees for the preservation and protection of monuments of St. Petersburg and Leningrad region, by the Fund for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage or architectural restoration organizations. Students are very serious-minded about participating in these competitions.

The contestants’ works will be on display through February 19 at the exposition hall of the Faculty of Architecture..
