100th birthday of graduate of Leningrad institute of municipal engineers (nor SPSUACE) Tatiana Vladimirovna Rimskaya-Korsakova

On January 30, 2015 Tatiana V. Rimskaya-Korsakova (17/30.01.1915, Petrograd – 05.04.2006, Saint Petersburg) would have turned 100 years. TatianaV. Rimskaya-Korsakova is a granddaughter of the Great Russian composer Nikolay A. Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908).

On January 31, 2015 in the Memorial museum-apartment of N.A. Rimsy-Korsakov (Zagorodny prospect, 28) there gathered descendants of the composer, relatives and friends of Tatiana Vladimirovna. This evening became a symbol of great respect and gratitude to a person who devoted all his life to conservation of the heritage left by N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov.

In the concert there took part actor of theatre “Pushkin’s school” Denis Frantsuzov and laureate of the international contests pianist Pavel Raikerus.

Tatiana V. Rimskaya-Korsakova was born in the family of the youngest son of the composer, layer and violin player Vladimir V. Rimsky-Korsakov (1882-1970) and Olga A. Gilianova (1887-1956) graduate of Smolny institute of noble ladies.

Father of Tatiana Vladimirovna was a member of the committee which organized 100-year anniversary of the composer. It is that period when the first memorial museum was opened in the family house of Rimskie-Korsakovy in Tikhvin and generous activity upon perpetuation of the memory about the great ancestor became publicly known. Tatiana Vladimirovna was also at the opening ceremony in 1944.

In 1938 Tatiana Rimskaya-Korsakova graduated from Leningrad institute of municipal engineers (former name of Saint Petersburg state university of architecture and civil engineering - SPSUACE), worked in Leningrad branch of the USSR Academy of Architecture, Leningrad regional scientific research and project institute of typical and experimental design, and headed the department which worked upon urban planning of Norilsk, Vorkuta and Irkutsk.

But his main activity was connected with preservation and development of the things connected with the name of N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov.

After having retired in 1973, Tatiana Vladimirovna took an active part in development of scientific concepts of museums in Tikhvin and Liubensk, prepared tasks in engineering design of museum complexes renovation, directed the charity fund named after N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov.

Since 1944 Tatiana Vladimirovna was inherently connected with the Memorial apartment-museum of N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov in Leningrad – building 28, Zagorodny prospect. Her professional recommendations in architecture were of great importance in restoration of the former planning of memorial rooms after complex repair of the building. The unique photo pictures of 1900-1908 presented by Tatiana Vladimirovna were made in the apartment helped renovate the original layout of the rooms, and the presented numerous things and family and antiquities became items of the exposition.

The memorial apartment-museum of N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov (Zagorodny prospect, 28) was opened on December 27, 1970. Here the composer lived last 15 years of his life (1893-1908) and this is the place where 11 of his operas were composed: “Sadko”, “Fairy tale about tsar Saltan”, “Tsar’s bride”, “Kashchey the Immortal”, “Zolotoy petushok”.

Tatiana Vladimirovna participated in all activities connected with the museum. Continuing the traditions of music meetings at Rimsky-Korsakov’s place she opened concert seasons, each year she performed at the evenings devoted to birthday of N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov and other remarkable anniversaries. At those numerous meetings with the museum visitors she told about interesting facts which were never written about in books about life of the Rimskie-Korsakovy. Speaking fluently several foreign languages she developed international ties with foreign musicians and met outstanding workers of the music art sphere.

But her life was not limited at Memorial museum-apartment in Saint Petersburg. He was also connected with the Museum-house at the composer’s motherland in Tikhvin (opened in 1944). The last big project she took part in was creation of the architectural project and exposition in the Museum “Liubensk-Vechasha” in Pliussky region of Pskovskaya oblast, where the composer had dachas.

During the Great Patriotic War composer’s residences in Vechasha and Liubensk where N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov passed away were totally burnt down by the German forces. After the war Liubensk residence was reconstructed, in Vechasha suing the old foundation there was built a new building. In 1995 there was ceremonially opened memorial museum complex. The first excursion was held by Tatiana Vladimirovna Rimskaya-Korsakova. Significant part of the museum’s items (manuscripts, books and photos) were granted by Tatiana Vladimirovna. It is difficult to overestimate importance of her work in organization of the Days of the composer memories, which are annually held on June, 22 – date of his death, scientific conferences and discussions devoted to N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov.

A noble and dedicated work of the great family inheritress in favor of the Russian culture was carried out by this outstanding lady till her last days of life. Just before her death in Liubensk there was opened an exhibition of photos of the residence in the beginning of the century made by members of the Rimskie-Korsakovy’s family. It is thanks to work and effort of Tatiana Vladimirovna why the exhibition was organized. She provided the materials, charity support.

T.V. Rimskaya-Korsakova is an author of tourist guides about the Memorial museum-apartment on Zagorodny prospect, a number of articles and two books about the composer: “Childhood and youth” (Saint Petersburg: Composer, 1995) and N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov in the family” (Saint Petersburg: Composer, 1999).  

Tatiana Vladimirovna was tied with founder of the Museum-institute of the Rerikhs in Saint Petersburg Liudmila Stepanovna Mitusova (1910-2004) by intimate bonds of friendship like their fathers Vladimir Nikolaevich Rimsky-Korsakov and Stepan Stepanovich Mitusov (1878–1942) — a cousin of Elena Ivanovna Rerikh (1879–1955, 1879–1955, maiden name Shaposhnikova, wife of artist N.K. Rerikh (1874–1947) and daughter of the academician  of architecture I.I. Shaposhnikov (1833–1898), who had worked about 40 years in the Institute of civil engineers (now SPSUACE).
