The FireWall team defends its project at the All-Russian Occupational Health and Safety Week: Konstantin Voronov, Aleksandra Vavulova, Elena Vaulina, and Aleksey Shulga
October 2026 was an eventful month for the SPbGASU Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Municipal Services (FEE&MS), featuring everything from all-Russian forums on occupational health and safety to environmental campaigns and preventive-education lectures. Students and teachers from the various departments took an active part in professional competitions, outreach initiatives, and career-guidance events—demonstrating both a high level of professional training and a strong commitment to the agenda of sustainable development and safety.
"Sirius": silver at the all-Russian digital solutions competition
From 7 to 10 October, students from the Department of Technosphere Safety took part in the XI All-Russian Occupational Safety Week, held in the "Sirius" federal territory. The forum brought together approximately 7,000 participants from across Russia, as well as delegations from the Republic of Belarus, China, and other nations. The central theme of the event was the integration of socially oriented technologies as a tool for achieving national goals.
At the All-Russian Occupational Health and Safety Week
A key milestone for the FEE&MS team was the final of the All-Russian competition for digital solutions utilizing artificial intelligence in the fields of occupational health and industrial safety, held on 10 October as part of "Youth Day." The team, known as "FireWall," successfully cleared the qualifying round and presented their project, "ACOUSTIC-DETECTOR-1"—a system for the acoustic predictive diagnostics of industrial equipment. The solution relies on AI algorithms to analyze sound signals and vibrations from operating machinery, enabling the early detection of malfunctions and the prevention of accidents. Following the final presentation, the project was awarded second place.
"Russia: free from terror". Preventing remote manipulations
From 19 to 24 October, the Department of Technosphere Safety held an awareness-raising week focused on the prevention of extremism, titled "Russia: free from terror." The highlight of the week was a mini-lecture by the Head of the Department, Andrey Nikulin, which addressed a concerning and increasingly relevant threat: the remote orchestration of arson attacks through telephone manipulation.
The lecture examined the mechanisms of social engineering: attackers pose as bank employees, police officers, or members of security services, misleading individuals and coercing them into taking actions supposedly "for their own safety"—effectively turning them into instruments for committing a crime. Older adults and those prone to high levels of stress are at particular risk. The key takeaway from the session is that the most reliable form of protection is to avoid speaking with unknown callers and never to share information received via SMS.
Environmental agenda: #nature47 forum and the “Record-Breaking Clean” game
On 22 October, first-year student Savva Puzhay took part in the First Regional Forum #nature47 (#природа47), held in the Leningrad Region. The forum brought together schoolchildren, university students, environmental activists, and experts to discuss conservation initiatives and facilitate the exchange of experience between regions. The program featured projects aimed at improving the environmental situation, as well as an awards ceremony for participants of educational environmental events designed for the younger generation.
"Record-Breaking Clean" campaign
On 24 October, second-year students majoring in "Environmental Management and Water Use" and "Technosphere Safety" took part in an environmental game called "Record-Breaking Clean", organized by the Administration of the Admiralteysky District of St Petersburg in collaboration with the "Record" Youth Center. The event’s main motto, as shared by student Ksenia Pushkina, was: "Clean up after yourself and others too—toss it all in a trash bag, no hesitation!"
Career guidance and professional development
On 27 October, the Department of Heat and Gas Supply and Ventilation hosted a career-guidance event called "Radiator Day," during which students had the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge related to their future profession and gain a deeper understanding of the core competencies required in the field.
On 28 October, students from the Department of Information and Mathematical Modeling Technologies, accompanied by the department’s acting head, Alena Vedernikova, visited the "Universe of Water" exhibition complex. The tour offered students a look at real-world examples of the engineering evolution of urban water infrastructure and helped them appreciate the interconnections between engineering systems, ecology, and public health—insights of particular value to future specialists in the fields of technosphere safety and environmental engineering.

October at the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Municipal Services confirmed that the faculty’s life extends well beyond the classroom; it is deeply engaged with real-world professional agendas—ranging from digital solutions for industrial safety to environmental education and the prevention of social threats.
