Every year on 1 July, Russia celebrates Restorer's Day. It was on this day in 1945 that the Leningrad Architectural Restoration Workshop was created to restore monuments destroyed during the war.
Restorer (from Latin restavratio – restoration) is a specialist in the preservation and restoration of historical and cultural heritage items: works of fine, decorative and applied art and architecture. Thanks to the work of restorers, we can see monuments of the past, immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of bygone eras, and better understand history.
This year, the SPbGASU Department of Architectural and Urban-Planning Heritage graduated 47 bachelors in the field of 07.03.02 Reconstruction and Restoration of Architectural Heritage; 20 masters in the field of 07.04.02 Reconstruction and Restoration of Architectural Heritage; 4 bachelors in the field of 54.03.04 Restoration.
It is planned to admit 120 applicants in the bachelor's field of study 07.03.02 Reconstruction and Restoration of Architectural Heritage; 30 applicants for master's degree in the field of 07.04.02 Reconstruction and Restoration of Architectural Heritage.
The Department's teacher, Associate Professor Nadezhda Akulova, spoke about what is taught at the Department:
"In the junior years, students learn the basics of design, then master the skills of working with historical heritage: identify the values of historical territories, analyze historical materials, determine the current state of restoration items. During their studies, students work mainly with historical objects or cultural heritage sites, know the importance of historical settlements and learn how to work with historical territories.
After graduating from the university, graduates can work in government monument protection agencies in any region of the country, as well as architects, restoration architects in any architectural or restoration design firm, as well as in any company that deals with historical heritage."
We wish restorers and those who are taking their first steps in the profession success on their chosen path!
