Galina Nam: "Modern Technologies Allow To Prevent Dangerous Situations Even Before An Accident Occurs"

Galina Nam, a senior lecturer at the Department of Technosphere Safety at St Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, successfully defended her dissertation on "Development of an Occupational Safety Control System at a Construction Site Using Information Modeling Technology" and received a PhD in engineering.

According to the researcher, her interest in occupational safety issues began during her student years. Her choice of field was driven by the high relevance of the issue to the construction industry, which is traditionally considered one of the most hazardous.

"All construction processes strive to keep up with the times, so we wanted the topic of safety to evolve as well. Modern technologies make it possible to create conditions conducive to improving safety. This is an excellent niche for research and development," notes Galina Evgenievna.

The main idea of ​​this dissertation is to create a proactive system for responding to security violations. Unlike many existing approaches, which focus on eliminating violations that have already occurred or rely on formal controls, the developed system enables the prediction of adverse events.

As part of the study, the author developed a mathematical framework that helps predict hazardous situations and reduce response times. This approach makes it possible to take necessary measures even before an accident occurs.

The work places particular emphasis on the use of information modeling technologies. According to Galina Nam, modern digital tools can significantly improve the effectiveness of security monitoring by processing large volumes of data, reducing the influence of human error, and increasing the objectivity of decision-making.

The practical significance of the study lies primarily in preserving the lives and health of workers. Furthermore, the use of such systems helps reduce downtime at construction sites and minimize financial losses for organizations.

The most challenging stage of the work was testing the research results. To conduct the tests, it was necessary to select a suitable construction site, taking into account a large number of factors.

Galina Nam expressed gratitude to her supervisor, PhD of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor at the Department of Technosphere Safety Olga Gorbunova, as well as to colleagues of the department, who provided professional and moral support throughout the work on the dissertation.

After successfully defending the dissertation, the researcher plans to continue her research. She sees the study of digital twins in the context of occupational safety on construction sites as a promising area.
