Practical Training At A Landmark Site: Students Visit The Renovation Of The Frunzenskaya Metro Station

On 23 September, the SPbGASU Faculty of Civil Engineering held an on-site practical class in the discipline “Technology of construction of buildings and structures”, as part of career guidance activity. It was attended by 26 fourth-year students majoring “Civil engineering”. Under the guidance of the senior teacher at the Department of Construction Technology (CT) Mkrtich Tonakanyan, future builders visited the site of a multifunctional complex, which is being built on the site of the lobby of the Frunzenskaya metro station. Let us remind you that the station was closed for reconstruction on 1 June, 2024.

This is a landmark project for St Petersburg, and the work is being closely monitored by the city administration and the metro authority. A new structure comprising two underground and five above-ground levels is being built on the site of the original 1961 vestibule. The armored dome from the historic building has been preserved; it will serve as the entry point for passengers accessing the escalators that lead down to the trains.

The students familiarized themselves with the specifics of constructing high-rise buildings in densely built-up urban areas and gained practical experience in maintaining as-built documentation, compiling the general work log, and monitoring concrete mix parameters.

Work currently underway at the site includes formwork installation, rebar cage assembly, and concrete placement. Operations are constrained by the limited size of the construction site, the need to account for the impact of the new construction on existing buildings and structures, and logistical challenges.

The Department of Construction Technology extends its gratitude for the organization of the technical tour to: Evgeny Deordiev, Chief Engineer of the Infrastructure Programs Directorate at the Metro Administration; Pavel Dzyuba, Deputy Head of the Directorate’s Production Department; Tatyana Saltykova, Technician at the Directorate; Vladimir Aleksandrov, Deputy Section Head at the "Roads and Bridges" JSC branch (Mostootryad 90); and Sergey Korotich, Head of the Construction and Reconstruction Supervision Department (Right-Bank Zone of St Petersburg) at the State Construction Supervision Administration of the St Petersburg State Construction Supervision and Expert Review Service.

In addition, to advance and pilot research on improving the technology for constructing joints in cast-in-place structures, the site was visited by Senior Lecturers at the Department of Construction Technology —Maria Kagan (who defended her PhD thesis in 2026) and Anastasia Bondar.
