PhD students from the Department of Urban Planning and graduates of the Landscape Architecture program at Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering participated in the fifth international conference SSC-2026, held in September at the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (RUDN) in Moscow. The event focused on the theme "Nature-based Solutions for a Healthy City."

The conference attracted scientists, planners, environmentalists, and municipal officials from more than 25 countries. A key focus of the discussion was the ecosystem functions of green infrastructure: participants examined how green spaces help regulate the microclimate, manage surface runoff, support biodiversity, and address urban development challenges in an integrated manner.

Specific conference sessions were dedicated to the application of artificial intelligence and issues of urban psychology. Particular attention was paid to environmental quality as a factor influencing the choice of location for living, working, and leisure.

Daria Gorbunova, Anastasia Sergeeva, and Anna Gavrilina—2024 Bachelor’s graduates of SPbGASU majoring in Landscape Architecture—presented a project titled "Open Green Laboratory and Ecosystem Service Monitoring for N. A. Ostrovsky Park." The project was developed as part of the 3 MUGIS summer school, under the guidance of mentors and within interdisciplinary teams. Daria Gorbunova is continuing her studies in the Master’s program at the SPbGASU Department of Urban Planning.

Svetlana Danilova, a PhD student at the Department of Urban Planning, presented a paper titled "Valery Nefedov’s St Petersburg School of Landscape Architecture: The 'Quarter of the Future' Project as a Case Study."

Pavel Ostapchuk, a lecturer in the Department of Landscape Architecture and a PhD student in the Department of Urban Planning, delivered a presentation on modern trends in the development of therapeutic gardens. He also addressed the role of landscape architecture in creating conditions for the recovery of health and cognitive functions among the elderly people and people with limited mobility following the coronavirus pandemic.

The participation of SPbGASU representatives in the conference upholds the traditions of the Russian school of landscape architecture. For decades, the university’s specialists have been developing principles of landscape-based urban redevelopment and the ecosystem approach, viewing green infrastructure as a vital component of the sustainable development of the urban environment.
