On the eve of the centennial anniversary of the Leningrad Region, which will be celebrated in 2027, the St Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering took the initiative to develop projects for the restoration of iconic objects of the region’s architectural heritage using digital technologies. The idea received support from the Urban Development Policy Committee and the Committee for the Preservation of the Cultural Heritage of the Region.
The project aims to create digital information models (DIM) for eight sites that have been lost and/or are undergoing restoration. These models will reflect both the current state of the sites and plans for their future restoration—encompassing everything from architectural and engineering solutions to cost estimates. The work is being carried out by interdisciplinary teams comprising students and teachers from SPbGASU and the St Petersburg College of Architecture and Civil Engineering (SPASK), alongside representatives from industry partners.
Based on the developed BIM models, VR and AR scenes will be created, allowing for a detailed examination of the interior and exterior design solutions.
An exhibition is planned to be held at venues in St Petersburg and the Leningrad Region to showcase the project's results, including design solutions, digital models, and physical mock-ups created using 3D printing.
The "Digital Revival" project is a response to the challenges facing the times and the industry. It will demonstrate the capabilities of digital tools in restoration work and facilitate the training of new specialists at real sites.
Currently, seven faculties, 19 departments, over 30 teachers, and more than 150 students are working on the project!
Project implementation period: September 2026 – December 2027.
