Competition winners

Valeria Dzhigil

Participants in the competition had to design a low-rise or multi-story residential building or public building and choose the right glazing for it. Among the main criteria by which the jury evaluated the projects were the architectural idea, safety, energy efficiency and the presentation.
18 participants reached the final.
The ArchYouth 2020 jury comprised the chief editor of the archspeech.com portal Alexander Zmeul; senior architectural and construction specialist at Schueco Company Ekaterina Trots, director general of Deceuninck Rus Volker Gut, director for technical regulation at Pilkington Glass Russia Maxim Lazutkin, founder and head of the Futura Architects bureau Oleg Manov, head of the architectural shop PTAM Vissarionova Yuri Vissarionov and its chief architect Semyon Starikov.

Valeria Dzhigil, the fifth-year student of the Architecture educational program at St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, won in the category of “University Students”. She developed a project for a five cinema hall multiplex building.

We asked the winner to share the details.

“The design was created as part of the educational process; I carried it out under the supervision of teachers at the Romanov Architectural Studio. They supported the initial idea, advised and helped me, especially in terms of substantiating the work from a constructive and technical view point. The rivalry in the competition was high. I believe that a quality presentation helped me win. I divided it into three parts: first I spoke about the idea and shaping, then I elaborated on the facade systems and window panes that are to be used, and ultimately I paid focused on the living environment of this building, how it will provide people with better comfort. I tried to make the presentation informative, but not overloaded with details,” said Valeria.
