The color of the Neva River on a foggy day, muted brick, "coffee with milk," and 37 other colors of St Petersburg became the topic of a practical seminar for students of the Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
The seminar was organized by the Committee for Urban Development and Architecture of St Petersburg at the request of the university.
The future architects were told that the officially approved color palette for the city on the Neva was developed in 1966 during a large-scale restoration of the historic center. All 40 colors were chosen deliberately: they are based on archival sources and descriptions.
The students not only became familiar with the color palette of the Northern capital, but also learned how to apply it in practice.
"We believe this will be useful for our city's future architects. St Petersburg is a unique city with such a color system. We've combined several events into one—both educational and training of our city's future personnel," said Elena Kramskova, Deputy Chair of the Committee for Urban Development and Architecture.
After the seminar, students were asked to independently select a color for one of the houses on Krylov Lane, which is currently undergoing restoration.
