Third-year students majoring in Land Management and Cadastre at the St Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering won a brilliant victory at the XI All-Russian Conference-Competition of undergraduate and postgraduate projects "Current issues in subsoil use." The competition was held at the Empress Catherine II St Petersburg Mining University.

The winning research paper by Elizaveta Kondratieva, Veronika Obryazhaeva, and Roman Rashchupkin, focused on geodetic support for restoration work. This area is a priority for SPbGASU.

The object of the study was the entrance area at our university's main building, a designated cultural heritage site. Until recently, information about this building was limited to written descriptions, photographs, and survey plans, which were not always able to convey all the nuances of its geometry and decoration.

In their work, the students integrated two cutting-edge methods: terrestrial laser scanning to obtain reference-precise geometry of the object, and photogrammetry to accurately capture texture and visual characteristics.

Using point clouds allows to store information about an architectural landmark with unprecedented accuracy. Unlike traditional methods, this approach eliminates the human factor during measurements and significantly reduces labor costs.

According to Olesya Samodolova, Deputy Dean for Career Guidance Counceling at the SPbGASU Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Municipal Services, "the future of restoration lies in digital twins. Integrating these technologies into the design process not only improves the quality of restoration but also significantly reduces its cost. The success of our students confirms SPbGASU's status as a leader in the implementation of modern geodetic methods for the preservation of cultural heritage."

We congratulate the students and their supervisor, Associate Professor and Acting Head of the Department of Geodesy, Land Management and Cadastre Yana Volkova, on their well-deserved victory!

The Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering continues to develop educational programs in the field of architectural heritage preservation. Starting 1 September, 2026, a new program—"Restoration of Buildings and Structures"—will be launched within the Civil engineering field of study. This program aims to train in-demand restoration engineers.
