Konstantin Shumilov, Associate Professor at the Department of Informatics, and Yuliana Guryeva, Associate Professor at the Department of Descriptive Geometry and Engineering Graphics, completed the research work “Modeling of architectural objects of complex shape” as part of the grant competition for research work by scientific and pedagogical staff of the St Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering in 2023

The work involves modeling complex architectural objects using visual (parametric) programming, which uses graphical elements as code elements. This type of programming allows specialists with an analytical mind to successfully create custom scripts (chains of nodes) after a short training.

The authors of the work selected the most suitable nodes, modifiers and their connections for each of the complex architectural objects considered as examples in order to create the most rational and optimized scripts for their parametric modeling.

“We chose objects that are often encountered in architectural design, complex in geometry, primarily plastic architectural forms. We solved the problems of visual programming of these forms using various options for compatible nodes and various plugins in Dynamo and Grasshopper,” the authors said.

According to the research authors, the use of visual (parametric) programming capabilities is one of the pressing issues in the development of building information modeling. It allows to expand the functionality of software packages, quickly and in a convenient interactive mode to model complex architectural and construction objects, especially with a large number of repeating elements - floors, architectural details, etc.
