On 21 April, the "Transport and Logistics" hackathon was held at the Faculty of Automobile and Road Building of the St Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, bringing together schoolchildren from the Northern Capital interested in engineering and transportation technologies.

The event was aimed at developing and supporting the creative and technical potential of students, popularizing engineering specialties, and expanding interest in technical education.

Seven schools in St Petersburg with transport classes took part in the hackathon: No. 141, No. 160, No. 331, No. 334, No. 496, No. 509, and No. 625.

After an introductory safety briefing, the students moved on to teamwork on projects. Finally, they presented their projects to a panel of experts. The evaluation of the projects took into account pre-project analysis, concept development, modeling, prototyping, and presentation skills.

The participants were presented with engineering and transport-logistics challenges relevant to the road transport industry, such as developing unmanned platforms, designing car-sharing fleets, organizing transportation logistics and servicing large events, and engineering challenges in construction, special equipment, and the automotive industry. Working on such challenging and complex projects allowed the students to explore the roles of engineers, logisticians, and designers, performing calculations, modeling, and justifying their decisions. Each team was mentored by teachers from the SPbGASU Faculty of Automobile and Road Building.

The expert jury included the Dean of the Faculty of Automobile and Road Building, Associate Professor at the Department of Land Transport and Technological Machines, PhD of Engineering Sciences Andrey Zazykin, Head of the Department of Land Transport and Technological Machines, Associate Professor, DSc in Engineering Elena Kurakina, Associate Professor at the Department of Transport Systems and Road and Bridge Construction, PhD of Engineering Sciences, Director of "SPbGASU - Dorservice" LLC, PhD of Engineering Sciences Egor Golov.

Hackathon results

Based on the results of the project defense, winners and prize winners were determined as follows.

The Grand Prix was won by the team of school No. 160 with the project “Correct tuning: development of a rear spoiler or wing for the Lada Vesta”, mentored by Igor Chernyaev, Head of the Department of Transport Maintenance, Associate Professor, PhD of Engineering Sciences.

1 place:

  • team of school No. 334 with the project “Development of a project for a fleet of electric car-sharing operators”, mentor – Pavel Razumov, Assistant at the Department of Transport Maintenance;

  • team of school No. 625 with the project “The path to Garage Fest: Igora Drive logistics”, mentor – Vera Davydova, Assistant at the Department of Transport Systems and Road and Bridge Construction.

2 place:

  • team of school No. 496 with the project “Justification of the parameters and technology of crushing stone materials for the construction industry”, mentor – Dmitry Anisimov, Assistant at the Department of Land Transport and Technological Machines;

  • team of school No. 509 with the project “Development of effective methods for operating earthmoving machines with a working environment”, mentors - Dmitry Anisimov and Igor Vorozheikin, Associate Professor at the Department of Land Transport and Technological Machines, PhD of Engineering Sciences.

3 place:

  • team of school No. 141 with the project “Designing an unmanned platform to optimize the internal processes of an industrial enterprise”, mentor - Roman Litvin, Deputy Dean for Research, Associate Professor at the Department of Land Transport and Technological Machines, PhD of Engineering Sciences;

  • team of school No. 331 with the project "Toys on the way: delivery Logistics for Detsky Mir," mentored by Vera Davydova.

Representatives of the Faculty of Automobile and Road Building note that the hackathon was an important stage in the collaboration between SPbGASU and transportation classes in St Petersburg schools, introducing students to real-world engineering challenges in the transportation and construction industries. The students gained experience in teamwork, project work, and publicly presenting their solutions, as well as the opportunity to explore the educational environment at SPbGASU.
