SPbGASU Publishes A Collective Monograph On The Development Of Architectural Science

Text: Nikolay Ambartsumov

27 Oct

In October, a collective monograph titled "Architectural Object: Image and Morphology. Works of a Scientific School" was published. It is dedicated to the emergence and development of a research direction established under the guidance of Yulia Yankovskaya, DSc in Architecture, Professor, and Head of the SPbGASU Department of Urban Planning.

This publication synthesizes over 25 years of research experience, explores theoretical foundations, key ideas, and concepts, and demonstrates how these have evolved and been applied within scientific and pedagogical work. The monograph was edited by Yulia Yankovskaya.

This book presents research conducted and defended over the past twenty years. The authors examine this work through the lens of developing and interpreting key concepts related to the study of architectural objects, their imagery, and their morphology. The theoretical foundation for these studies lies in classic works of Russian architectural scholarship.

The monograph was created with the participation of Yulia Yankovskaya, eleven holders of PhD of Architecture who completed their dissertations under her academic supervision, and one other researcher with whom she has collaborated on scholarly and creative projects. The co-authors represent various cities and regions across Russia and abroad. Some of them continue to develop the ideas presented here as part of their own doctoral research.

A distinctive feature of this publication is that it reflects not only the results of individual projects but also the development of a shared theoretical approach. What unites the contributors is less a common subject of study than the collaborative effort to develop the conceptual and theoretical foundations of architectural research. Consequently, the book makes it possible to trace the interconnections between works that otherwise differ in their specific themes and academic disciplines.

The publication of this monograph has provided an opportunity to reflect on many years of research experience, analyze the continuity of scholarly ideas, and identify prospects for their further development. According to Yulia Yankovskaya, this work may also serve as an impetus for other leading research groups within the SPbGASU Faculty of Architecture to systematize their own experience and present the results of their work through scholarly publications.

Yulia Yankovskaya expresses her gratitude to her former PhD students—now her co-authors—for their collaborative work in testing and developing theoretical ideas and concepts. She also thanks her colleagues in the Department of Urban Planning and the Faculty of Architecture, the members of the dissertation council, and the university administration for their support of this initiative.
