In Moskovsky Victory Park, the students laid flowers at the monuments to Marshal Georgy Zhukov, Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya, Alexander Matrosov and other war memorial plaques. Then they honoured the memory of war heroes near the monuments to the fallen students and teachers of the First Medical Institute, volunteers of the 3rd Frunzenskaya division of people’s militia, the Grazhdanka civilian airfield memorial located in Prospekt Nauki (Science Avenue).
Some places of military glory are not widely known. For example, the monument "Grazhdanka Airfield" was erected in 1975 in memory of the military airfield that operated during the Great Patriotic War. The memorial sign "Vagonetka" (“Trolley”), unveiled in 2001 in Moskovsky Victory Park, is an authentic relic of the war, which was raised from the bottom of the pond: during the war there was a brick factory on the park territory that served as a crematorium for the perished Leningraders.
Angelina Vasilyeva, a second-year student of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and coordinator of the Victory Volunteers movement at SPbGASU, told about other volunteers’ activities: “We give all kinds of assistance to veterans, from helping with cleaning and buying food to teaching computer literacy, and give them holidays gifts. I've been a volunteer for six years now. When I entered SPbGASU, I really wanted this movement to function in our university too.”
The Victory Volunteers movement was organized in 2015. Today it is a powerful social movement uniting thousands of people. Its participants are engaged in a wide range of activities: they take care of veterans, improve memorial sites and military graves, and hold large-scale events.
