Currently, the department is implementing a differentiated training scheme for road transport infrastructure construction engineers: bachelor - engineer - master - PhD of engineering sciences - DSc in engineering. Every year, 8–12 PhD and doctoral students, about 20–28 masters, 150–300 full-time and part-time students, including international students, study at the department. In difficult conditions of economic reform, market renewal, changes in the system of training specialists, the department annually graduates about 80 ready-made engineers, taking into account the best traditions of organizing the educational process, practices and mastering innovative technologies and the needs of modern construction of transport infrastructure facilities.

Graduates of the department work at leading enterprises of the road transport and construction complex, are engaged in scientific, pedagogical and commercial activities, take part in the construction of the largest objects of all-Russian importance - roads, airfields, bridges and tunnels, complex transport interchanges and other structures. The main experimental base of the department is transport communications, roads and bridges not only in St Petersburg, but also in the entire North-West of the country.

Teachers of the department, together with students and PhD students, have examined and tested more than 1000 bridges and pipes, more than 200 sections of roads (some of them repeatedly), which is an invaluable contribution to the road industry of the North-West region. The advantage of the department is that graduation projects are carried out at the request of enterprises on real topics.

The department maintains close ties with more than 30 design and construction organizations, including such as VAD JSC, Stroyproekt Institute JSC, Transmost JSC and many others. The students of the department take industrial and undergraduate practice in more than 20 design and construction organizations of the city, various state institutions of St Petersburg, which allows them to gain invaluable practical experience. The teachers of the department cooperate with leading construction and design organizations, participate in solving problems related to the design, reconstruction, assessment of the technical condition of transport facilities and industrial and civil facilities. This cooperation makes it possible to put their knowledge into practice when solving complex engineering problems, and on the other hand, to use the experience gained in teaching. Senior students, PhD students and doctoral students are usually also envolved in this work.
