History of the Department of Architectural and Urban-Planning Heritage

1929

  • The Department of Restoration and Reconstruction of Architectural Heritage was founded.

1931

  • New Department of Architectural Design and Drawing started to educate architects. At that time the Department of Restoration and Reconstruction of Architectural Heritage worked upon academic projects development and gave lectures for all university students. The Laboratory of Construction Machines and Architecture room were established.

1945-1955

  • The department developed lecture courses in Industrial Architecture, Concepts of Construction Equipment, Design Theory and researched into shopping centres design in civic buildings, housing design analysis, metal and ceramic shingle roofs analysis.

1957

  • A new specialty in building units and structures for prefabricated building was determined due to government direction to industrialization of construction.

1969

  • Engineering students studied according to new teaching methodology which was focused on creative thinking, spatial awareness and nonstandard architectural solutions. New specialty ‘Building Maintenance’ was established.

1996

  • New specialty ‘Architectural Heritage Reconstruction and Restoration’ was established and so was called the department. The role of postgraduate education increased.

Present day

  • The department is well known among professional restorers of Saint Petersburg. It cooperates with the Karlruhe Institute of Technology (Germany) in concrete buildings restoration. The staff actively examines historical buildings, does urban planning and historical survey. Students’ final projects win at international contests and have diplomas of the Union of Architects of Russian Federation.
