History of the Department of Technology of Construction Materials and Metrology

1900-s

  • History of our Department roots back to 1900, when the Department of Construction Materials was founded at the St. Petersburg Civil Engineering Institute along with a mechanical laboratory. The first head of the department and the laboratory was V.V. Evald, a prominent scholar and expert in many scientific fields: from chemistry to mechanical testing of construction materials. His Construction Materials textbook had 14 reprints.

1920s-1930s

  • The Department of Construction Materials was always distinct with broad research in the sphere of construction materials and their practical testing. Often, construction materials were tested by request of construction organizations. In particular, scholars of the department carried out extensive and effective testing of clays to explore their usability for the production of coarse ceramics.

1940s-1950s

  • The two following decades in the department’s history included the war and post-war period and all the hardships incurred. However, the department kept training students and holding researches, connected with the study and use in construction of new construction materials, such as vermiculite. Vast studies were carried out on the new approaches to the production of type IV cements and testing of concretes held in the structures for extensive periods of time. Studies on the production and application of mineral wool slabs were launched.

1960s-1970s

  • Under direction of Professor P.I. Bozhenov, who had been leading the department for nearly 40 years (1951-1989), many new research areas were actively developed at the department, including the technology of colored straight cements, utilization of side industrial products for the production of ceramic structures, development and implemented of resource-saving technologies for the construction materials production, new concrete compositions on the basis of fine and very fine sands, etc. In the same years, a new concept of pore structure of light concretes on the basis of expanded aggregates.

1980s-1990s

  • For their active studies on the use of vermiculite in construction, a whole team of the department employees was awarded with a Prize of the USSR Council of Ministers. In 1997, a dedicated Center for Testing Construction Materials was established on the basis of the department; it was licensed by the RF Ministry of Construction. Broad-scale studies on fiber reinforcement concretes were implemented. Spheres of rational use of various types and technological processes and equipment were developed.

2009

  • Two earlier existing SPbGASU departments, namely, the Department of Construction Materials and the Department of Technology of Construction Products and Structures, were merged into the Department of Construction Materials and Technologies. A science and education center for studying efficient construction materials, constructions, and technologies for unique buildings and structures was established on the basis of the department.

2013

  • The Department of Construction Materials and Metrology was merged with the Department of Construction Materials and Technologies.

2015

  • The Department of Construction Materials and Metrology was renamed to its present name the Department of Technology of Construction Materials and Metrology.
