In accordance with the Agreement between the Russian Science Foundation and the Government of St Petersburg on cooperation in supporting fundamental and exploratory scientific research, dated November 19, 2021, the Russian Science Foundation announced a public competition for RSF grants for the event "Conducting fundamental and exploratory scientific research by individual research groups" (regional competition).
Grants are allocated for fundamental scientific research and exploratory scientific research in 2027–2028.
The compatition is accepting projects implemented by research teams (four to ten people) based in Russian research organizations and Russian higher education institutions located in St Petersburg, including those with branches in St Petersburg. At least 50 percent of the total research team members must be aged 39 or younger throughout the project's implementation period.
Projects submitted by individual research groups to the regional competition must comply with the RSF's competition documentation for the regional competition and the following application acceptance conditions:

projects submitted to the regional competition by individual research groups must correspond to the list of tasks of priority research areas supported by St Petersburg in accordance with the Agreement, during the joint competitive selections in 2026 (hereinafter referred to as the list of priority tasks);

projects must include the implementation of exploratory scientific research that has applied significance and is aimed at creating technological conditions for the socio-economic development of St Petersburg.
In 2027, the planned funding volume from St Petersburg for projects supported as a result of this regional competition is 7.5 million rubles.
Applicants to the regional competition in St Petersburg, in addition to their application to the Russian Science Foundation, must submit an application to the St Petersburg State Autonomous Institution "Foundation for the Support of Scientific, Scientific-Technical, and Innovative Activities."
An application to the Foundation (in addition to an application to the Russian Science Foundation) is submitted through The Unified Portal of Science and Higher (Professional) Education of St Petersburg (a registration link appears after authorization) in the form of an electronic image of the application submitted to the Russian Science Foundation.
