Starting in 2026, the Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering will launch a new program, "Environmental Management and Engineering Protection of Territories" as part of the field of study 20.03.02 "Environmental Management and Water Use". The new educational program, offered by the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Municipal Services (FEE&MS), is designed to train specialists who will address pressing issues of environmental engineering protection, environmental safety, and sustainable urban development.
As noted by Dmitry Ulrikh, Dean of the FEE&MS, Professor at the Department of Water Use and Environment, and DSc in Engineering, the decision to open the profile was a response to the industry's growing need for engineers capable of developing and implementing comprehensive solutions to protect territories from flooding, erosion, landslides, and other hazardous natural processes.
Among the specialized disciplines are:The training will focus on the design, construction, and operation of engineering protection structures, coastal and slope stabilization, sustainable land use, and infrastructure safety improvements. Particular emphasis will be placed on interdisciplinary training, integrating engineering, environmental, and management competencies.
- Natural and man-made complexes and principles of environmental management;
- Fundamentals of architectural and civil engineering structures;
- Hydrogeology, hydrology, climatology, meteorology;
- Soil science, and landscape science;
- Integrated use of water bodies;
- Foundations engineering;
- Reinforced concrete and masonry structures;
- Metal and timber structures;
- Design of specially protected natural areas;
- Nature protection structures;
- Hydraulic structures;
- Hydraulics of engineering protection structures;
- Concepts for creating environmentally safe cities;
- Engineering systems for environmental management;
- Integrated engineering improvement of urban areas;
- Design of engineering protection systems.
In 2026, 20 budget places and 40 places under a contract are available for applicants.
Entrance examinations (USE) for the specialty "Environmental Management and Engineering Protection of Territories" in order of priority:
- Mathematics
- Chemistry, physics, computer science, (optional)
- Russian language
Submission of documents deadline: until 17:00 Moscow time on 25 July.
Ongoing interaction with employers will be a key component of the educational process. Students in the program will be able to complete internships at leading industry organizations, complete courseworks and final theses using materials from partner companies, and certain courses will be taught by practicing specialists with experience in implementing large-scale infrastructure projects.
A striking example of this approach was the introductory training for students majoring in "Environmental Management and Water Use" at the construction site of the Astra-Continental residential complex, being developed by Setl Group. The tour allowed future specialists to see how modern environmental requirements and engineering solutions are applied at a large construction site.
This training format will allow students to acquire not only fundamental knowledge but also practical skills in demand in the labor market. They will be able to work in the fields of land protection engineering, hydraulic engineering, environmental management, land reclamation, operation of protective structures, and environmental monitoring of construction projects.
Modern challenges require engineers capable of not only designing facilities but also ensuring their safety, environmental sustainability, and reliability. SPbGASU's new program meets these requirements by combining fundamental engineering training, practical training, and close collaboration with leading industry companies.
