Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Leningrad Siege

The siege of Leningrad began on 8 September, 1941. For the long 872 days, the city was almost completely cut off from the rest of the country, and its inhabitants found themselves in the hardest conditions. But the lack of food, the destroyed water supply, the lack of electricity and many hours of artillery shelling did not break the spirit of the Leningraders. The city continued to live, work and help the front.

The LISI representatives who remained in the besieged Leningrad built defensive structures, covered historical and architectural monuments, and examined objects that had been damaged by bombs and shells. The names of the heroes who gave their lives at the front, died from starvation and shelling, are listed in the Book of Memory and in the Immortal Regiment of SPbGASU.

The siege was broken on 18 January, 1943 and completely lifted on 27 January, 1944.

The courage of the people who survived and defeated the enemy will forever remain in the memory of posterity.
