Career Day at SPbGASU

15 employer companies, 3 lectures, 2 stand-up comedians and a competition with a prize fund of 120 thousand rubles: Career Day, held at our university on 14 March, turned out to be eventful. Students learned about the current situation in the industry, broadened their professional horizons, got acquainted with career opportunities in the region and took a step towards their dream job.

The event was organized by the SPbGASU Division for Student Entrepreneurship and Career and the Faculty of Civil Engineering, as well as one of the leading developers of engineering software, the Nanosoft company.

We choose, we get chosen

Career Day gave students the opportunity to see companies' presentations and interact directly with employers. Even those who had not yet thought about future employment noted the benefits of the event. Young people are interested in what specialties the country needs, what companies do, and what requirements are imposed on applicants. According to SPbGASU students, a dream job should satisfy material needs and be interesting.

Such well-known companies as Metrostroy of the Northern Capital, Setl Group, Samolet Group, State Unitary Enterprise Vodokanal of St Petersburg and others are interested in new personnel.

They want to see talented, smart and purposeful people at the Acron Engineering Research and Design Center LLC, a subsidiary of Acron PJSC. The company carries out complex engineering work, designs chemical industry and civil facilities. Here they are ready to offer students internships or jobs. This was stated by Nikita Semenov, information modeling technician.

The flow of interested visitors at the stand of Atomenergoproekt, the largest design institute in the Russian nuclear industry, which is part of the engineering division of Rosatom and has more than 75 years of experience in designing nuclear power plants around the world, did not wane. Representatives of the company answered questions from students about what tasks they would have to solve, what programs they would use and what equipment they would work with. The requirements for applicants are quite high, but completing an internship at the company will be an advantage when looking for a job. A framework agreement has been concluded between Atomenergoproekt and SPbGASU, said Aleksandra Kalyonova, senior specialist in the personnel assessment and training department.

The art of compiling a resume

2. Ольга Зенина.jpgOlga Zenina

Olga Zenina, head of career guidance division at SuperJob and a certified expert in emotional intelligence, shared useful tips on writing a resume. The speaker recommended that students show individuality, look for their own characteristics and be able to demonstrate them.

According to Olga Zenina, experienced HR specialists evaluate a resume in about five seconds. At the same time, most people are visual people, and the first thing a recruiter evaluates is photography. Resumes without a photo are viewed 25 percent less often than resumes with a photo. Successful and unsuccessful examples of photographs were analyzed by the lecture participants themselves.

What to write on your resume if you have no experience? Olga Zenina revealed a secret: every student has experience. This concept is much broader: it includes practical classes, internships, participation in specialized exhibitions and forums, theses, part-time jobs or freelancing, and extracurricular activities. If you have no experience in your profile, you should indicate any other. This is important because many employers look not only at professional skills, but also at personal competencies. Any part-time job during your student years allows you to improve your communication skills, responsibility, and diligence.

At the end of the lecture, the audience received an invitation to join SuperJob Start, a job search platform for students and young professionals from SuperJob.

How to enter the labor market

Yaroslava Kalyanova, recruitment specialist at Ancor HR holding, spoke about the situation on the labor market. Today, employers need “stars” – young specialists with high potential. Such a person is confident in himself, aims at a specific company, and presents his experience based on the requirements of the vacancy.

The speaker recommended training “soft” competencies that compensate for the lack of experience, and bringing self-presentation to automaticity - after all, on our life path we probably meet more than one employer, and this is normal. You should study the company market and draw up a search map. The next step is to write a resume and interact with vacancies through Head Hunter, social networks and recruitment agencies.

The advantages of recruitment agencies are access to confidential vacancies (these are vacancies that are on the market, but they are not visible in the public domain), as well as information databases in which data is stored for decades. The recruitment agency will select favorable salary offers, provide feedback from the employer, prepare for interviews, support in competitions, and will “fight” for the candidate.

Yaroslava Kalyanova provided a selection of channels with vacancies and interdisciplinary positions that are relevant for SPbGASU students, calling on them to adhere to a business style when communicating with employers on social networks: do not forget to fully introduce yourself, indicate which vacancy you are applying for, and ask for feedback.

Marina Malyutina, head of the SPbGASU Division for Student Entrepreneurship and Career, spoke about the work of the division she heads, which was created this January. The focus of the management is not only employment, but also practical studies, internships, and courses that complement the main educational program. Two acceleration programs for student entrepreneurship have been launched. One of them, TechnoPiter, was launched jointly with the St Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation. The second, called “I’m in business,” is being implemented together with the “Captains” charitable foundation for supporting educational programs. Announcements of career guidance events, open lectures, master classes are published in the Telegram channel @CAREER_GASU; and you can get individual career advice in the University office 233-G.

While waiting for the results of the competition to be summed up, the audience was entertained by stand-up comedians: Semyon Vasiliev, host of Comedy Radio, and Sergey Ponomarenko, participant in the Open Microphone project on TNT.
