On 20 April, the SPbGASU Internatiional Students Council held an excursion “Secrets of Old Vyborg”.

The trip to this ancient city of the Leningrad region began with a fascinating sightseeing tour, where students got acquainted with the Town Hall Square, the Burger's estate, the Citizen's House, the Clock Tower and the Vyborg Hermitage exhibition center. They visited the oldest residential building in Russia, which was built in the 15th century. All these attractions are attractive because they are built of stone, and the roads are paved with granite paving stones. This city setting transported students to the Middle Ages.

Continuing the walk, the guys went on an excursion to the central library of the city, built according to the design of the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. This is his only building on Russian territory. The guide revealed the main idea when designing the library - Aalto took into account all the features of working with books and their storage. That is why the building, for example, has round windows in the roof, and the reading room has a “wavy” ceiling. The history of the library is inextricably linked with the history of Vyborg.

“A trip to Vyborg for one day is a historical journey through the labyrinths of narrow streets, to the Town Hall Square, to the castle with a tower. Having left the metropolis, in about two hours you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of medieval Europe,” noted Antonia Angelova, Chairman of the SPbGASU International Students Council.
