In early April, an open lecture for future engineers was held at the "Growth Point" space of the Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering. Second- and third-year students majoring in Water Supply and Sanitation met with Aleksey Shchukin, General Director of Region company, and a graduate of SPbGASU.
Region company, founded by Aleksey Vladimirovich, is a leader in the industry, having successfully completed over 230 water supply and sanitation projects across the country.
Real-life design: mistakes and risks
The lecture's topic, "Specifics of water intake design in Russian regions," covered the industry's most pressing issues. The speaker thoroughly examined the typical mistakes faced by beginners and presented a unique risk-mitigation mechanism developed by his company.
Particular attention was paid to modern technologies: students learned how mathematical and physical modeling helped predict system behavior before construction began. The lecturer also addressed global challenges—for example, how climate change affect the operation of existing facilities and which engineering solutions help adapt to new conditions.
Aleksey ShchukinBeyond the drawing board
The most lively part of the meeting was the case studies. Aleksey Vladimirovich shared case studies from construction sites and described curious and unexpected situations that arose during field supervision. These examples clearly demonstrated to future specialists that an engineer's work involved more than just calculations, but also the ability to make quick, innovative decisions in the field.
Lively dialogue
The lecture sparked keen interest among the students. They actively asked questions about careers, necessary skills, and the specifics of working in Russia's various climate zones. The meeting once again confirmed that direct dialogue between industry experts and students is the fastest way to develop in-demand personnel.
Career path: internships and career development
Concluding the meeting, Aleksey Shchukin emphasized that Region company was always interested in young and ambitious professionals willing to learn on real projects. SPbGASU students have the opportunity to complete an internship or work placement with a team of professionals to experience the design process from the inside – from the initial calculations to on-site supervision.
