On May 19, 2015 in our University architect Steven Fridlender – founder of the architectural bureau HMFH Architects, Inc. (Cambridge, MA, USA) read a lecture on subject “Planning, design and construction of new objects in Boston Conservatory of New England, one of the oldest music education institutions of the USA”. The lecture was held within the framework of the 27th festival of “Educational bridge” project.

The lecture was read in English. But even those listeners, who didn't know English well enough, fully understood the lecture. With the modesty natural to him Mr. Fridlender noticed at the beginning of the lecture that he would read a lecture not as an architect, but as a member of the Supervisory board of Boston Conservatory. During the lecture he showed a lot of schemes and drawings, and his explanations were simple, comprehensible and fascinating.

Boston Conservatory is situated in the centre of the city. It is a historic building, which was built in 1902, and which needs modernization and suspension in accordance with current requirements. But it is difficult to do it, because, firstly, it is necessary to preserve its original historic look. Secondly, there is heavy traffic at the nearby streets, which also causes some difficulties. However solutions to all of these tasks and problems were found and city leaders have already laid the first symbolic foundation stone at the place of works.

The American guest gave a detailed introduction of the scope of works to be made. Roomy halls aimed at rehearsals, student hostel, a café, a theatre with a modern stage and many others – all this will be in the renovated Boston Conservatory. Steven Fridlender shared extremely interesting and educational data which will be useful for all who makes, teaches or studies architecture.

Russian-American project “Educational Bridge” has been existing 13 years already. Our architects have participated in it the third time already and have great opportunities for further development.
