Students of the Faculty of Architecture of Saint Petersburg state university of architecture and civil engineering will take an active part in the social project “Studio of benches” which will take place on April 12, 2014 and will allow creating a new creative place for citizens of Saint Petersburg to meet.

Student of the 4th course of the faculty of architecture of Saint Petersburg state university of architecture and civil engineering Anna Mytsul and architect, graduate of the Chair of Urban Construction of the faculty of architecture of Saint Petersburg state university of architecture and civil engineering of 2013 Yury Nasonov decided to participate in the social project “Studio of benches” as a group “ArchSynthesis”.

The project is aimed at creating a new creative place for citizens of Saint Petersburg to meet. This place will be located in one of the parks of Saint Petersburg. There will be set 25 benches created by designers, specialists of various areas and citizens. On April, 12 there will take place an official ceremony of opening the alley of creative benches.

“ArchSynthesis” team will present a parameter bench called “BioBench”. Parameter design project was chosen by the architects because it allows optimizing architecture for special purposes, for example, to minimize materials used and cut materials. Moreover this form is easier to perceive, but at the same time not too simple. It is not surprising that parametrism becomes a most popular architectural trend. However in Russia the situation is different. By means of this project authors wanted to show how this approach to designing small forms can be used in gardens and parks.

Principal material used by the authors of the project is bakelized plywood which combines properties of natural materials and modern technologies. It consists of birch tree sliced thin veneer sheets impregnated and glued by resin. Its durability is similar to that of low-alloy steel; it is fire resistant, water proof and longliving due to treatment with spirit soluble gum and water soluble resin. Because of its properties it has more anti-vandal characteristics than ordinary plywood and will please park visitors longer.
