The Interaction of Universities with the Construction Business
was Discussed at a Round Table in SPbGASU

On 25 November, SPbGASU hosted a round table “Where to find and how to retain personnel in the construction industry”. The event was organized by the Club of Employers of St Petersburg under the Committee on Labour and Employment of the City Administration together with the SPbGASU Students and alumni employment assistance service.

Anna Silina, Olga Pogodina and Vladimir Osmankin

The meeting was moderated by Anna Silina, HR Director of Hermes Group LLC, Chief HR Expert of the Institute of Business Education of the National Research University "Higher School of Economics", Chairman of the Council of the Club of Employers.

Marina Malyutina, Head of the SPbGASU division for study administration, delivered a welcoming speech and informed about the results of a survey conducted among employers on the quality of training at SPbGASU. According to the survey, employers rate the theoretical training of graduates of our university, the communicative qualities of young specialists, their ability for teamwork, systemic and critical thinking most highly. Marina Malyutina called on employers to cooperate, emphasizing that practical training is impossible without their participation. The key to effective training is in direct communication with the industry, which is an important component of education.

“Why should businesses cooperate with universities? To get a quality graduate, a ready-made employee. The community of employers needs to be more deeply involved in the educational process,” believes Marina Malyutina.

Vladimir Osmankin, Head of Recruitment at ANCOR Industry, gave an overview of the labour market in the construction industry. In his opinion, the situation is not in favor of employers: there are more vacancies than applicants. There are few candidates, and employers have to fight for them. At the same time, the speaker said that wages in the construction industry are growing.

Olga Pogodina, Deputy Director of the St Petersburg Employment Center, spoke about new recruitment tools. These include the all-Russian database of vacancies "Work in Russia", job fairs, social networks.

Ekaterina Nekrasova, Ulyana Benzater, Andrey Chumanov, Maria Ermakova and Ivanna Gilmanova

Ekaterina Nekrasova, Director of the Department of Labour Relations, Compensations and Benefits of the Etalon group, noted that there is a shortage of qualified experts on the market, especially in IT specialties.

Maria Ermakova, Director of the Human Resources and Organizational Development Department of the Setl Group holding, spoke about personnel training programs, the corporate system of working with universities and recruiting personnel. The system of work with universities includes regular joint events with specialized educational institutions, as well as the provision of a large number of places for students to practice and train.

Aleksandr Lapygin, CEO of ROSEKO-Stroyproekt LLC, shared his opinion on what tools are needed for successful recruitment and talked about new technologies for attracting and retaining personnel used in his company. First of all, new employees are attracted by the opportunity to engage in interesting projects in which they can use their knowledge to the maximum and improve their own professional skills.

Ulyana Benzater, Bonava Business Partner, spoke about the internship program at her company, through which they attract, adapt and develop young professionals. The internship program gives students the opportunity to prove themselves in the industry, improve their skills.

Ivanna Gilmanova, HR partner at the Engineering Center of JSC NIPIGAZ in St Petersburg, noted that the salary expectations of young professionals are often too high, but if they show good results during the first year of work, then they can really qualify for the conditions provided to experienced employees. Professionals showing high potential for growth are also paid for training in third-party organizations to improve basic and auxiliary professional skills.

Andrey Chumanov, Head of Projects for Work with Educational Institutions at SISOFT Development, Deputy Quality and Research Manager of the Skills and Professions Development Agency, shared his experience of participating in WorldSkills Russia projects. He emphasized: “A graduate is not always a specialist, since his training may not meet the current requirements of the industry. Corporate championships held with the participation of companies are the platform where the student is involved in work processes that are close to real, and the employer checks and evaluates his professional skills.”

The Club of Employers is a joint project of the St Petersburg Committee for Labour and Employment and the St Petersburg Employment Service. This is a platform for an open dialogue between representatives of government and business.
