This year, the creative “Wooden structures in modern architecture” competition for architectural students took place for the second time. Its organizers are the large construction corporation Rus and the SPbGASU Department of Architectural and Construction Structures. Last year, only SPbGASU students took part in the competition. This time, the organizers decided to make the event open for other contestants and participants from Moscow and Minsk also took part in the competition.

✔ The theme of this year's competition is “A country house: the image of the future.” Architectural students were required to develop concepts for individual residential housing using modern glued wooden structures. The task of the contestants was to offer their vision of suburban housing development of the future with original functional saturation and architectural forms, revealing the possibilities of modern glued wooden structures.

Five finalists presented to the jury members their designs of country houses using wooden structures.

“All ideas were original and individual. Each project offered not only a solution to a particular problem, but also an approach or tool applicable to different conditions, such as a forest plot; a plot divided by river; a scenic section. To varying degrees, the projects reflected the principles of modifiability, modularity, quick-assembly, as well as original solutions in the relationships between the capabilities of modern wooden structures and architectural shaping,” said Dmitry Ivanov, assistant professor at the SPbGASU Department of Architectural and Construction Structures.

The jury was headed by Dmitry D. Mayorov, member of the board of directors of the Rus Corporation. The jury members were: Anna Alexandrova, editor-in-chief of the Zagorodnoye Obozreniye journal; Aleksey V. Nasonovsky, head of the architectural and design department of the Rus corporation; Inna S. Zayats, associate professor of the Department of Architectural and Construction Structures, and Alexander Veshnyakov, senior lecturer of the SPbGASU Department of Architectural Design.

All finalists of the competition were students of SPbGASU:

Evgeny Bushuev, group 2-RAN-4;

Bayan Mirzakeyeva, group 2-A-3

“I designed the main house and the guest house, interconnected by a glass gallery, which houses the dining and living rooms. According to the project, a river runs between the two houses, the width of which is 10 meters. It is above it that the common zone is located - the gallery, which offers a picturesque view. This competition is a good opportunity to show your knowledge, show creativity, express thoughts outside the educational process. The main difficulty that I encountered when creating the project was the foundations. I decided to make them of piles, as the area is rather marshy, the river has blurry banks, and there is a relief. In the future, I would like to major specifically in country houses, in order to further develop in this line,” Maria, Rybak, the winner of the contest, shared her impressions.

“I wanted the wooden house to be not only comfortable, but also harmoniously fit into the environment. The spatial solution was created with the account of the existing natural situation, and that is why trees are an integral part of the composition of the building. I am grateful to the organizers of the contest for the new experience,” said Anna Sorokina, who came in a close 2nd place.
