The XVII International Conference "Organization and Traffic Safety Management in Large Cities" has opened at the Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering. Running from 23 to 26 September, the event brings together scholars and representatives from government bodies, the transport industry, and educational and research organizations—both from Russia and abroad—to discuss modern solutions for road safety and the development of transport systems.
SPbGASU has been organizing this conference biennially since 1995. Over this period, it has attracted more than 10,000 specialists from Russia and abroad. This enduring international forum facilitates the exchange of scientific expertise, the development of professional cooperation, and the search for practical solutions aimed at reducing accident rates and enhancing road safety.
The opening ceremony and plenary session took place on 24 September in the SPbGASU Academic Council Hall. The event was held in a hybrid format, bringing together both in-person and remote participants.
Welcoming remarks were delivered by Evgeny Korolev, SPbGASU Vice-Rector for Research; Anton Akhminov, Deputy Head of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate Directorate of the Main Directorate of the Russian Interior Ministry for St Petersburg and the Leningrad Region; Ekaterina Kozyreva, First Deputy Chair of KGIOP; Yuri Trofimenko, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Transport; Mikhail Prisyazhnyuk, Advisor to the Governor of the Leningrad Region; Dmitry Efanov, Director of the N. S. Solomenko Institute of Transport Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences; and representatives of leading specialized universities from Russia and the Republic of Belarus.
The plenary session focused on the development of transport science, intelligent transport systems, the digitalization of road infrastructure, the preservation of the historic urban environment, and the improvement of road safety mechanisms.
Participants presented reports addressing organizational and methodological issues regarding the development of transport science in Russia, ensuring road safety within St Petersburg’s historic urban areas, additional measures for transporting hazardous goods, the use of intelligent video analytics for the automated detection of traffic violations, the authorization of highly automated vehicles on public roads, and the development of independent technical expertise and corporate systems for preventing traffic accidents.
The conference will proceed across several scientific tracks. The program includes sessions dedicated to traffic management and intelligent transport systems, transport accessibility in the Arctic, the reconstruction and forensic analysis of traffic accidents, the reliability of transport vehicles, and the professional development of young scientists in the transport sector, as well as a meeting of the Public Council of the St Petersburg Transport Committee.
Following the conference, participants will present research findings, discuss prospects for inter-university and international cooperation, and formulate proposals for developing a safe and sustainable transport environment in major cities.
