History of the Department of Information Systems and Technologies

The Department of Information Systems and Technologies, compared to many other departments of the university, exists relatively recently - since October 1983. Its emergence was caused by the appearance in the second half of the 20th century of the first computers and, as a consequence, the emergence of a huge number of new tasks and opportunities. In almost all areas of engineering, computer technologies began using to carry out complex calculations, and the need for teaching disciplines related to the use of computers increased.

Since its formation, the department has changed several names, and the directions of its activities have also changed and expanded. This was primarily due to the emergence of new technologies and new needs of the industry.

Initially, the department was named the Department of Applied Mathematics and began its activities headed by the LISI Vice-Rector for Research, DSc in Engineering, Professor Vitaly Zakharovich Vasiliev.

The faculty was formed from teachers who transferred from the department of higher mathematics, namely, Vladimir Vasilyevich Karpov, Leonid Danilovich Pekarev and Lyudmila Aleksandrovna Shusharina. In addition, new university employees were hired at the department - Evgeny Borisovich Lyubimov, Sergey Nikolaevich Nikiforov, Tatiana Petrovna Ilyina.

The main disciplines taught at the department were “Computer Programming” and “Numerical Methods”. The department was entrusted with the leadership of the council on computer technology and the scientific management of the LISI computing center. They started publishing the collection of scientific papers “Analytical and numerical solutions of applied problems of mathematical physics”. Carrying out activities for general training of university teachers in programming and computer technologies also became the responsibility of the department.

From the moment the department was founded, the directions of its scientific activity began to form, i.e. mathematical modeling in problems of nonlinear calculation of thin-walled structures (Vladimir Vasilyevich Karpov), development of the theory of parallel diagnostics of discrete objects (Sergey Nikolaevich Nikiforov).

In 1985, DSc in Engineering, Professor Nikolai Viktorovich Varlamov became the head of the department. Teachers Vladimir Valentinovich Shatskov and Marina Viktorovna Shatskova joined the department.

In 1986, the department was transformed into the Department of Computer-Aided Design and Control Systems, and in September 1987, the Department of Computational Mathematics was separated from it.

Professor Boris Georgievich Vager became the head of the department. Under his leadership, a new scientific direction appeared at the department related to the study of the boundary layers of the atmosphere and ocean, as well as mathematical modeling of turbulent fluid flow in relation to meteorological problems.

Andrey Yurievich Garnaev, Viktor Abramovich Frolkis, Olga Alekseevna Shebshaevich joined the teaching staff. A. Yu. Garnaev began to develop a direction related to mathematical cybernetics and game theory.

Teachers V.V. Shatskov (supervised by V.V. Karpov), O.A. Shebshaevich, M.V. Shatskova defended their PhD theses; V.V. Karpov and A.Yu. Garnaev became doctors of science.

From 1988 to 2000, Maria Aleksandrovna Milyutina, Tatiana Germanovna Kapitonova, Nadezhda Nikolaevna Petukhova, Lyudmila Konstantinovna Narbut, Maria Fedorovna Yakovleva, Anatoly Mikhailovich Kokorin, Lidia Fedorovna Vasenina, Olga Viktorovna Bukunova came to work at the department.

During this period, display classes were opened at the university, which made it possible to conduct classes using personal computers. By 2002, two educational laboratories (headed by Maria Aleksandrovna Milyutina and Leonid Grigorievich Litvinenko) ensured the educational process in four display classrooms.

They started publishing the collection of scientific papers “Numerical methods in mathematical modeling of hydrodynamic and technological processes” (since 1993 it became known as “Mathematical modeling, numerical methods and software packages”).

In 1993, the department opened a postgraduate course in the specialties “Application of computer technology and methods of computational mathematics in scientific research” and “Theoretical foundations of mathematical modeling, numerical methods and software packages.” From 1994 until 2007, the dissertation council was functioning (with interruptions).

In 1999, based on a resolution of the University Academic Council, the Department of Computational Mathematics was renamed the Department of Applied Mathematics and Informatics.

Thanks to the efforts of Boris Georgievich Vager, in 2000 the department became graduating in the specialty “Applied Mathematics”, and in 2005 the first 14 mathematical engineers had graduated.

Due to the emergence of a large number of new narrow-profile disciplines, professors E. L. Genikhovich, Yu. K. Demyanovich, Yu. I. Ingster, B. P. Kharlamov, V. I. Vorobyov were invited to the department.

In 2010, Professor Sergey Nikolaevich Nikiforov became the head of the Department of AMI. In subsequent years, I. A. Evsikov, L. P. Moskalenko, M. M. Romadanova, A. A. Semenov, S. V. Bukunov joined the team.

Following the transition to bachelor's and master's degrees system in 2015–2019, the department graduated bachelors in the specialty “Applied Mathematics”. Since 2013, on the initiative of S. N. Nikiforov, in connection with the active development of information technologies, a new field of study was opened, i.e. “Applied mathematics and informatics” (first bachelor’s degree, and then master’s degree).

Starting in 2017, the department changed its name again, becoming the Department of Computer Science. The department was led by Aleksey Aleksandrovich Semenov.

Around the same time, one of the main activities of the department was the development and implementation in the educational process of BIM technologies as the basis for digitalization in the construction industry. Due to the great need for specialists proficient in both BIM and programming technologies, new fields of study “Information systems and technologies” (bachelor’s and master’s degrees) have been opened since 2020. In 2023, the department began training graduates in the field of study "Applied Informatics" (bachelor's and master's degrees).

In 2023, the department was renamed again, receiving the name of the Department of Information Systems and Technologies.
