The department plays an important role in the work of scientific schools and academies of the city. It has a leading place in the work of the Professor N. K. Snitko Section of Structural Mechanics and the Reliability of Structures at the St. Petersburg House of Scientists of the Russian Academy of Sciences; it is a co-founder of the annual international conferences
The department actively cooperates with the TECHSOFT software company developing program complexes for the construction and annually holds a regional scientific-practical seminar "Calculation and Design of Building Structures Using the BIM-System Ing +".
The main areas of scientific work with graduate and postgraduate students include:
- improving the reliability of log building structures for the second group of limit states and the study of the carrying capacity of the joints of the elements of wooden building structures based on the use of metal gear plates
- research of anisotropy and strength of natural and synthetic composite materials;
- current problems of power engineering
