An authoring team of the Department of Architectural and Urban Heritage are among the leaders of the All-Russian Architectural Competition

On February 5, in Vyborg they summed up the results of an open architectural competition for the development of the conceptual design, namely, “Construction of an art school for 600 students”. The SPbGASU authoring team is in the top three.

School of Music

Nadezhda A. Akulova

The group, led by Associate Professor of the Department of Architectural and Urban Heritage Nadezhda Akulova, included first-year graduate students Ksenia Romanchuk and Alevtina Brits, and second-year graduate students Daria Mishagina and Maria Rybalchenko.

The site on which the school is planned to be built is located next to the Vyborg Central City Library, a world-famous building of Alvar Aalto. The designers strived to create no dissonance around it.

Since one of the requirements of the technical specification was to fill all the free space, the authors decided to compose a building of two volumes, one of which would house a concert hall, and the other one would be the school itself. Both buildings are lined along the same axis as the library.

An interesting detail was the placement on the facade of a screen on which announcements of concerts and other events, as well as decorative images can be placed. Thanks to this, the school staff should be able to independently change the appearance of the structure.

According to the authors of the project, an important task was to make the school accessible to people with limited mobility. To do this, they foresaw ramps at the entrance, special elevators, convenient access to the stages, special dressing rooms for those who move in wheelchairs.

Competition finalist project

Participants in the architectural competition say they have gained a valuable teamwork experience and the opportunity to try out their ideas on a specific project. As a result of the presentation, the jury highly appreciated the proposal of the SPbGASU students.

Congratulations to the finalists and wishes of continued success!
