Department of Architectural and Urban-Planning Heritage

About the department

In the period from the 1850s to 1916 in St Petersburg and Petrograd itself, graduates and professors of the department built more than two thirds of the buildings, structures and constructions, many of which in our time are deservedly classified as architectural monuments - objects of cultural heritage.

At the same time, more than 90% of city, provincial and diocesan architects throughout Russia of those times were graduates of our department. The geography of activities of teachers and graduates of the SU - IGI is huge. Many professors, teachers and graduates worked not only in St Petersburg - Petrograd, in the counties of the St Petersburg region, but throughout Russia: from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, Finland, Poland to the Crimea, Kiev, Baku, Bukhara, Kokand, Shamakhi, Blagoveshchensk, Vladivostok, as well as outside Russia - in Sweden, France, the USA. The names of many graduates and professors of the department are deservedly included in encyclopedias, monographs and textbooks in Russia and other countries.

In 1924, the modern Department of Architectural Design “spun off” from the “trunk” of the old department, and in 1928, the modern Department of Urban Planning appeared. Today we continue the traditions of the cathedral school. We have revived all three educational lines for our students, which are in great demand in design, restoration and security organizations:

  • protection of historical and cultural heritage;
  • restoration of cultural heritage sites (monuments);
  • reconstruction of the historical environment.

The department trains bachelors and masters, as well as PhD and doctoral students in the following fields of study:

  • 07.03.02 Reconstruction and restoration of architectural heritage (bachelor's degree) – according to FSES HE 3++, specialization "Reconstruction and restoration of architectural heritage";
  • 07.04.02 Reconstruction and restoration of architectural heritage (master's degree) – according to FSES HE 3++, specialization "Reconstruction and restoration of architectural heritage monuments";

Welcome from the head of the department

Profile
Dear colleagues and friends!

Welcome to the webpage of the SPbGASU Department of Architectural and Urban Planning Heritage.

Our department dates back to 1830, when the Imperial Academy of Arts (IAH) opened a subdivision for training of architects of a special orientation - architects aimed at organizing the architectural and construction business in the cities and provinces of Russia. In 1842, to implement this grandiose idea on the scale of Russia, the Construction School (SU) was formed, which became the founder of the Faculty of Architecture at our university. In the SU structure there was an architectural division - the direct predecessor of our department.

The goal remained the same - to create everywhere, not only in the capitals, but also in the far ends of the country, modern architecture based on in-depth knowledge of historical and modern architecture and architectural and construction art, in unity with an equally in-depth development of architectural and construction legislation and the construction process management system in cities, provinces, dioceses. Even the creation in 1882 on the basis of SU of the Institute of Civil Engineers (IGI) preserved these principles of training specialists for the entire vast Russian Empire. And this approach gave very significant results.

All our students, as well as PhD and doctoral students, perform unique in topics, special for each one, term papers, graduation and qualifying works, assignments for which are prepared by the administrations of cities and regions of the North-West of Russia, heritage protection committees, museum reserves, major design projects and industrial restoration organizations. All works, starting from the second year, necessarily include, in accordance with the all-Russian legislation, research and design components, because we are dealing with existing historical objects and territories. According to the requirements of the system of protection and restoration legislation, before developing a project for the restoration of a building or structure, a project for the reconstruction of a quarter or other fragment of the historical environment, it is necessary to carefully, in detail and in depth study all historical data about this object - in archives and collections of historical materials, with a mandatory comprehensive natural laboratory examination. Therefore, even these primary pre-project studies of historical objects become independent lines of training for our students and are highly valued by specialists.

The department, its students and teachers participate in many international educational programs, competitions and conferences with architectural universities and faculties of Germany, Spain, Italy, Norway, Finland, Sweden. Final qualifying works (diploma works) of our bachelors and masters invariably receive the highest awards at international and all-Russian competitions. After graduation, our alumni work in committees for the protection of monuments, in leading design, restoration and contract restoration organizations not only in St Petersburg, but in the entire North-West of the country.

I wish our students (current and prospective) fruitful education, quality training, success in their professional activities after graduation.
